Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Achieves Energy Efficiency and Appealing Aesthetics with WAC

When the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergens, Vermont needed energy efficient lighting for its new Hazlet Watercraft Center, the executives turned to WAC.

Working closely with Green Mountain Electric Supply and Efficiency Vermont, the museum was able to secure significant rebate funding for new LED lighting.

More than 100 18-watt LED track luminaires were installed throughout the building. The track luminaires were ceiling mounted and deployed wide angle beam spreads for general lighting in the larger areas. Spots, were mounted onto upright posts, which provided accent lighting in tight spaces and highlighted specific boat details.

"We loved the concept of energy efficiency and WAC's fixtures provided exactly what we needed for illuminating the exhibit spaces," said Erick Tichonuk, Co-Executive Director of Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. "The color rendering, and the feeling that the lighting provides, is precisely what we were looking for."

Gregg Laber, a Lighting Consultant for Green Mountain Electric Supply, stated, "The museum wanted an energy saving solution that provides excellent color, highlights the exhibits using different beam spreads and takes advantage of rebates offered by Efficiency Vermont. WAC's LED lighting was our choice and Efficiency Vermont was able to provide us a custom rebate that made a very quick payback on investment; not to mention reduced maintenance because of the longevity of LEDs over traditional light sources. It was a win-win solution for Erick and the museum."

LED track luminaires highlight small historic watercraft including Adirondack guide boats, canoes, pulling boats and skiffs that residents and tourists used around Lake Champlain waterways. Often overshadowed by steamboats and larger canal boats, the museum wanted to preserve these smaller vessels for future generations to see.

The centerpiece of the exhibit, featured on the lower level, is a 110-year-old ice yacht that navigated through the region's frozen lakes and rivers.

In addition to LED lighting, the museum also employs energy efficient insulation, windows, heating and cooling systems.

"Our employees, donors and visitors are very impressed with WAC's LED lighting," continued Mr. Tichonuk. "As a reputable institution, we want to set the example of how we would like the world to be and energy efficiency plays a major role."
